Race Report: 2017 8 Oras ng Pilipinas

December 2 to 3, 2017, Clark International Speedway Result: 3rd in Class (FM1), 7th Overall

AutoPerformance Motorsport came into this race as one of the favorites for the first time. Unfortunately, a blown engine required a full engine rebuild, which the new crew - led by Jun Magno - accomplished in 36 hours. But this meant the team needed to take it easier on the car, which took a toll. Still, a class win was within reach up until a transmission issue left the car without 2nd gear in the final hour of the race. Still, the team managed to salvage a podium, finishing just two laps behind the class winner. Through all these challenges, perseverance and teamwork have become that team's hallmark.

Mechanical problems with the transmission just a week before race day, and then engine problems just two day before, our crew of amazing mechanics pulled off a near miracle. After a mind-bending 36-straight ours of engine work, our crew not only gave us a working car, but one that was oh so close to victory.

Aside from these mechanical problems, the biggest hurdle this weekend was the superteam assembled by Parts Pro Racing, comprised of an all-pro champion driver lineup, piloting the car that was already one of the quickest on the grid. To be able to match this, our team's three amateur drivers would have to step their games up to support our two pros.

Stefan Ramirez posted a qualifying time that put us in 9th overall and 4th in class, but we always knew that our greatest strength was in consistent race pace. With Stef also taking the first stint, we were confident that we would climb up the ladder. Sure enough, by the time he was done with his shift, we were firmly in the podium places.

Enrique Hormillo put in another excellent showing, putting in lap after lap and getting the team up to 2nd in class.

Third driver Francis Aguila was assigned the middle stint - the hottest part of the day, and despite an unintended drift exhibition around Porsche corner, was able to maintain that position.

New member SJ Park started on the back foot, when Parts Pro moved up the order in the pits. But his impressive one-lap pace helped the team maintain its pace to compete for a podium.

With a win within reach, the team's second ace, George Apacible, took the reins and went chasing after the leaders. Unfortunately, a transmission problem left him without 2nd gear for almost his entire stint, hampering his ability to go for the win. Despite the handicap, he was able to maintain his position to secure a 3rd place finish in the FM1 class.

At the end of the day, Team BMW AutoPerformance finished 3rd in class and 7th overall. We finished just 2 laps behind the class champion despite all the issued we had before and during the race. This is the third consecutive podium finish for the team, done in three endurance races.

While we are disappointed that we did not take the win this time, the team has proven to be a perennial championship contender regardless of the challenges we face. And with the rate at which we are improving, sky is the limit for what we can accomplish.
