Race Report: 2018 Kalayaan Cup 12 Hours

June 11 to 12, 2018, Clark International Speedway Result: 1st Overall, 1st in Class (RP), 1st in Class (FM1)

The 12 Hour Kalayaan Cup was the first of its kind, - the longest endurance race ever held in the Philippines. With four top-tier teams vying for the honor of the country's first 12-hour winner, this race was to be the team's most difficult challenge ever.

We faced more setbacks in this one race than in any other that we have ever competed in. With a differential issue preventing new additions Sung Joon "SJ" Park and Mig Dizon from getting any practice time, the team would face a severe handicap. Moreover, Francis Aguila suffered a debilitating back injury just two weeks ahead of the race. While his replacement, Jeff Borja, is a veteran pro, he also had no practice time with the M3.

A crash in free practice with newcomer SJ Park behind the wheel nearly ended the race before it began, further limiting the opportunities for the new drivers to acclimate themselves to the car. Once again, however, our amazing team of mechanics worked day and night to get the car back on track. The resulting damage, however, compromised the car's performance, making it that much harder to get consistent lap times.

Thanks to the amazing efforts of our mechanics and crew, the M3 was improbably ready by qualifying. Stefan Ramirez put in an amazing effort put us in the 2nd row, and first in the hotly contested FM-1 class.

The rainy conditions made the track slippery, and several cars spun out and suffered damage. Stefan, however, displayed his mastery of the wet conditions, and by the time his stint was done, he had recorded the fastest lap of the day (2:28.7) and put our team in P1 - not just in class, but overall.

SJ Park kept the pace, proving the spin in practice was a fluke. His performance kept the team in P1 when he handed the M3 over to Enrique Hormillo, who kept the position throughout his stint. Jeff Borja struggled early in his first real session in the M3, dropping down to P2, but soon acclimated and finished strong.

George Apacible had thrilling battles in the worst conditions, out-dueling both Carlos Anton and Don Pastor in a 3-way dogfight. George showed his class by retaking P1, and pulling a gap to put the team ahead of 2nd place GT Radial.

Anchor Mig Dizon struggled for grip throughout his stint, but did just enough to take the car past the checkered flag in first place. By race end, the team had done 243 laps - over 1,000km - a new record for the longest race distance ever run in the Philippines. Once again, we have made history, taking home two class wins and the overall championship in the longest endurance race ever held in Philippines.
